Entomology → Music Genre Framework
field notes & classification rationale — v1.0
Fifteen insect orders, each mapped to a music genre based on behaviour, ecology, temperament, and a healthy dose of pattern-matching. Each order can have pop versions and subgenres within it — this is a flexible framework, and opinions can evolve with enough evidence.
Araneae — Classical
SpidersClassical
- Daunting, sometimes scary, but hauntingly beautiful
- Pianists would benefit from spider-like tendencies when playing
- So many sensitive hairs — orchestral in their sensitivity
Blattodea — Punk
CockroachesPunk
- Uncrushable force — could survive the apocalypse
- Loves moisture, i.e. a wet, sweaty basement
- Could form a little colony and revolt
- Grunge overlap with Coleoptera for rock 'n' roll
Coleoptera — Rock
BeetlesRock
- Beatles / beetles
- Hard shell, soft centre
- Ugly beetles will be hair metal
- Cool beetles will be ambient rock, rhapsodies, folk rock, crazy performances
Dermaptera — Latin
EarwigsLatin
- I love Latin music and earwigs — here to change how we discuss both
- Let's debunk the myth: they do not lay eggs in your ears. Absolute load of rubbish.
- Both ancient — earwigs ~200 million years old, Indigenous Latin music traditions thousands of years old
- Female earwigs are fiercely devoted mothers and don't abandon their eggs, unlike most insects
- Earwigs form family structures
- The boy earwigs have superman-ly pincers (machismo)
Diptera — Top 40 / Slop
FliesTop-40
- Some Top 40 is genuinely great — this is about the TikTok-bite Top 40 that's just meant to make money
- Artists from any genre can participate in slop activities
- Market manipulators can partake in this too
- Reality-TV music
- So many mosquito qualities suit AI slop music
Ephemeroptera — Reggae
MayfliesReggae
- Part of EPT — biological indicator of a healthy ecosystem
- Loves water, then coastal-to-water transitions
- Loves fish
- Performs a mid-air dance
Hemiptera — Blues
True bugsBlues
- All-encompassing and essential framework for every other genre / bug
- Music today, in any respect, doesn't exist without the blues
Hymenoptera — R&B
Bees & antsR&B
- That universal hum (ohm) — the buzzing of a beautiful bee
- Pollinating the other genres (flowers) that are music
- Much like without our pollinators we couldn't survive — music could never have existed without the blues
Lepidoptera — Indie
Butterflies & mothsIndie
- Plenty of indie subgenres, but generally — poppy, folky indie — obviously butterflies
- The darker sister is alternative — much like the darker sister to the butterfly is the moth: nocturnal
- Garage rock overlap here too
Mantidae — Jazz
MantisesJazz
- Classy, sexy, smooth — need I say more
- They look like an instrument, move like no other, and seem to defy gravity
Neuroptera — Folk
LacewingsFolk / singer-songwriter
- Could be found in a grassy field — habitats matter here
- Soft, delicate — couldn't handle Bob Dylan going electric
- Natural-looking, unlike the synthetic alien energy of Odonata
Odonata — Pop
DragonfliesPop
- Speaking of pop — these aren't real, but they aren't fake either. Synthetic.
- Dancers in how they fly — legendary
Orthoptera — Country
Crickets & grasshoppersCountry
- Rural, Americana ties — Louisiana, Nashville
- You can find a grasshopper in Memphis, guaranteed
Phasmatodea — Rap
Stick & leaf insectsRap
- There's a lot of jazz sampling in rap, so it felt right to connect the two — also used to confuse Mantidae (jazz) with stick insects growing up
- Ability to remove a limb and regenerate it feels revolutionary, much like some political rap messaging
- The way they bob and rock back and forth matches rap rhythms
- Some female phasmids don't need males and reproduce via parthenogenesis — the whole process feels like sampling
Trichoptera — Electronic
CaddisfliesElectronic
- Underground, related to moths (alt) — alt scene energy
- Silk that solidifies their structure feels like the community aspect of that scene
- The adults don't eat — much like people in the club on a big night out can't eat
Notes
There's a pop version of each genre — usually the most basic genus or species within it. Jumping spiders, for instance, would be classical pop.
These are strict guidelines, but opinions can evolve with enough evidence — a girl can change her mind.
